I had the honor of volunteering with 

Hope From Harrison this past weekend,

and I was so moved by Matt & Melissa Hudson

and everything that they do to help 

children and families in need.

I instantly knew that I had to be apart of it all.

inspired and moved me in such a way that was earth shaking.

DIY: Fascinator aka Tiny Hat

I was so excited when Brenda,

of Humble Bumble B Hats,

not only told me that she would teach me how to make my own fascinator,

but also that we could share this little DIY on the blog!

So here is what you need:

thick fusible interfacing

felt

fabric glue

needle and thread

fabric hole punch

bobby pins

any decorating supplies you would like

Step 1:

So first you want to start with tracing and cut a circle onto your interfacing

about the size of your hat.

Step 2:

After your circle is cut out, fold it in half.

On the top and bottom of the folded edge, draw a two inch line.

Unfold.

Re-fold again with the opposite sides touching and mark  your two inch line again.

When your circle is laid flat it should have 4 marks like this.

Now cut those lines.

Step 3:

Over lap the edges of the trimed circle and stitch them in place.

Once all four overlapping edges are stitched your hat will stand up like this.

Step 4:

Flip your hat over onto a piece of felt and roughly trace and cut

a wide enough circle to be able to overlap onto the inside of the hat.

Step 5:

Press the felt onto the top side of the hat.

Use the directions for your fusible interfacing.

Step 6:

Taking small sections to keep the edges neat,

fold over and press the edges onto the inside of the hat.

Step 7:

Trace and cut another felt circle and press it into the inside of the hat.

Use your fabric glue to secure the over lapping edges

You can use a fabric hole punch to puncture three holes close to the edge of the hat.

Use bobby pins through the holes to secure the hat to your hair.

Step 8:

I was trying to make a hat that I saw on Pinterest.

You can see it here in My Pinterest Closet.

So I used gold acrylic paint to paint polka dots on to the top of the hat.

Use your imagination to decorate your own.

With these fancy little hats, anything goes!

Lucky for me, one of my dearest friends specialized in such matters.

So over an afternoon play date,

Little Miss HumbleBumble taught me how to make my very own.

drum roll please! it's official....you know all that news that i have been hinting about....well folks here it is. i finally did it. i opened an etsy shop. the shop will be stocked full of vintage treasures and eventually some handmade goodies! please please please check it out and leave me some feedback. if there are any of my handmade gifts that you know for sure you would like to see please let me know! i am so excited about the shop, and it kinda make me feel like i am gonna puke! hahaha

i just wanted to let you guys in on some more of our handmade christmas.  the hubs isn't the best at buying gifts, and that's ok....we are working on it. but there is one thing that he's great at and that's working with his hands. i am pretty sure that he can make just about anything that he puts his mind to. he loves a good project and i love that about him.  so when i fell in love with this necklace from bhldn i knew just the person to make it for me.

while it's not the exact same, i have to say that i love my version so much more! the hubs used an old beat up skateboard deck to make my heart necklace. i love that it came from something that he loved and i love that it was upcycled. i love that it's reversible too. so it pretty much goes with anything i wear, and i have worn it almost everyday since christmas. what do you guys think? amazing right?

p.s. he said he will make more if anyone is interested in purchasing them.

new necklaces

i have been super inspired lately by geometric shapes. there is just something about math and art combined that just really get me going! haha i am suck a geek.  so i busted out the polymer clay and started chiseling away until i had these perfectly imperfect black beads. then i strung them all together into some necklaces.

these are two separate necklaces that can be stacked together like the picture above, or then can be worn alone like below.  i am kinda in love with how beautifully they turned out! simple and edgy yet somewhat elegant. what do you think? have you ever made jewelry with polymer clay?

that takes place in a mountain of bubbles.

by the end of the day your glasses are covered 

in yogurt finger prints and squishy nose smudge marks. 

your favorite shirt is now the canvas 

for an art project gone silly.

i wouldn't trade any of the mess.

joys of parenting: halloween

i feel the need to make a small confession...

halloween is quickly approaching and my amazing new job is keeping me busy.
making costumes this year was put on the back burner (ie...i procrastinated).
took the boy to the halloween store....bad idea.
i purchased a pre-made batman costume.
i am not proud of my self.....but the boy looks so cute!

DIY: succulent wall garden

i've been crushing over these living art wall hangings and just had to make my own....and i thought i would share. so here is what you will need. to start you need a shadow boxed picture frame.  i found this one a while ago thrifting and it worked perfect for the project. you are also going to need quite a few succulent clippings, enough to almost fill your frame. you need potting soil, hardware cloth, wire cutters, a staple gun, and a pencil. 

step 1:

a few days before you are ready to start your wall garden, 

clip you succulents and strip the bases to allow them to callus.  

step 2:

measure and cut your hardware wire to fit on the inside of the picture frame. 

if you have a file, file down the sharp edges of the hardware wire.

 (note: for your own safety your should curl back the edges of the 

extra hardware cloth....that stuff is deadly!)

step 3:

you need to best water proof the inside of your shadow box. 

i tried using modge podge, but next time i may try to line it with plastic.

step 4:

staple the hardware cloth the inside of the frame. 

attach the shadow box.

step 5:

fill the frame with potting soil. 

begin to plant your succulents using the pencil to poke holes in the soil.

step 6:

continue planting the succulents giving them ample space to grow and fill in.  

once they are all planted, keeping the frame laying flat for about a week

 to allow the clippings to begin to take root.

after it's rooted you are ready to hang it.

take down and water once a week, 

or if you are keeping it in a humid place you can water less.

DIY: trunk end table

i have a super special DIY to share with you guys today! this little project is something that the hubs and i have been talking about for quite some time, and on day one of our "stay-cation" we decided to finally make it!

the hubs has had this trunk for who knows how long.  it served great purpose as our tv stand forever, but has recently graduated to fabric storage....and now fabric storage/end table.

ok, so here's what you'll need: 4 x 1" diameter 12" long galvanized nipples (pipes), 4 x 1" galvanized end caps, 4 x 1" galvanized falanges, 4 x wood blocks (4"x4"), 16 machine screws and bolts.

you will also need a ruler, marking pen, and power drill 

measure and mark where the falanges will be attached to the bottom of the trunk.  pre-drill the holes in the bottom of the trunk.

adhere the wood block to the inside of the trunk directly over the pre-drilled holes.

once the glue is dry drill holes through the wood blocks.

attach all 4 falanges.

attach the end caps to the ends of all 4 pipes.

screw the legs into the bottom of the trunk and .... (tada).....
